Prima della nascita della I-League, in India non esisteva un vero e proprio campionato nazionale per squadre di club. Infatti, oltre alle numerosissime competizioni locali, si disputavano vari tornei con la formula della coppa, come la Durand Cup e il Santosh Trophy, a cui partecipavano le selezioni degli Stati indiani ed alcune delle istituzioni governative, e la Federation Cup, che vedeva la partecipazione dei migliori club del paese. Nel 1996 aveva visto la luce la National Football League.

 

 

I-LEAGUE

Nel 2007 nacque la I-League, in sostituzione della National Football League, che versava in gravi difficoltà economiche. Il nome “I-League” fu scelto per assonanza con altre importanti leghe asiatiche, come la J-League (Giappone, la K-League (Corea del Sud) o la A-League (Australia). Le squadre possono tesserare fino ad un massimo di 4 giocatori stranieri, schierandone al massimo 3 contemporaneamente. Sono previsti cospicui incentivi economici per i club con lo scopo di trattenere i migliori giocatori. Gli incentivi sono finalizzati anche allo sviluppo dei vivai e degli staff tecnici. La competizione si svolge da Ottobre a Maggio.

MUMBAY (BOMBAY) LEAGUE

La Bombay League, nota anche con il nome di Harwood League, vide la luce nel 1902. Le primee dizioni furono organizzate dal Colonnello J. G. Harwood (RAMC), che fu anche il presidente fondatore della Western India Football Association (WIFA), nata nel settembre 1902. In seguito tale associazione fu sciolta e sostituita dalla Harwood League e dal Rovers Tournament, competizioni organizzate da due distinti comitati fino al 1911, data in cui prese il via una nuova W.I.F.A., allo scopo di assumere su di sé il governo del calcio di tutta la regione. Come in tutte le competizioni dell’India coloniale, nei primi anni di vita anche il campionato era dominato dalle squadre dei reggimenti dell’esercito britannico. La prima squadra nativa indiana a vincere il campionato fu la West India Automobile Association Staff, nel 1942.

Negli anni successivi crebbero le dispute tra le relative associazioni che tentavano di organizzare altre competizioni nella regione di Bombay. Nel corso degli anni Novanta si svolsero due campionati in contemporanea, uno solo dei quali ha mantenuto il nome Harwood League. I maggiori club gravitavano intorno all’altro più prestigioso torneo. Le due leghe rivali furono unificate nel 2000. La città di Bombay è stata ribattezzata Mumbai nel 1996.

Dal 1990 al 1999 si disputarono due distinte competizioni, una organizzata dalla Bombay District Football Association (B.D.F.A., poi ribattezzata M.D.F.A. quando la città di Bombay cambiò nome in Mumbai), e l’altra dalla W.I.F.A.. La prima ritenne opportuno utilizzare il nome di “Harwood League”. Negli anni seguenti, i migliori club si trasferirono nella W.I.F.A. League.

CALCUTTA/KOLKATA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

La Calcutta Football League (CFL) raccoglie i numerosi club della città di Calcutta. Attualmente la CFL è composta da 7 “Divisions” ed è inserita all’interno della struttura della Indian Football Association (IFA), che a sua volta governa il calcio nello stato dello West Bengal.Sono affiliati alla CFL157 club e squadre. Nata nel 1898, questa lega è la più antica dell’Asia e una delle più antiche del mondo. Sono iscritti alla CFL circa 8.500 calciatori.

DELHI LEAGUE

La Delhi Football League è il campionato a cui partecipano i club della capitale dell’Unione Indiana. In 12 occasioni il torneo non è giunto al termine. Le edizioni dal 1977 al 1981 non furono portate a termine, a causa della frammentazione del calcio nella zona di Delhi. Dal 1985 è stata adottata una nuova formula (Delhi Super League) che prevede due gironi e una fase finale ad eliminazione diretta per l’assegnazione del titolo.

GOA LEAGUE

Le prime notizie di incontri di calcio disputati nello Stato di Goa (ex colonia portoghese) risalgono al 1883, il primo campionato ufficiale fu organizzato solo nel 1951 con il nome di First Division, sotto l’egida del Conselho de Desportos presieduto dal Maggiore Faustino Duarte. Tale organismo continuò a gestire la competizione fino al 1958. Nel 1959 fu fondata la Goa Football Association, che ne rilevò le funzioni. Le attività sportive proseguirono regolarmente, malgrado l’incorporazione della colonia portoghese di Goa nell’Unione Indiana, avvenuta nel 1961. Nella stagione 1969/70 presero il via la Senior Division League, che divenne il torneo di vertice e la First Division League, suddivisa in due gironi, North Zone (Ilhas e Bardez) e South Zone (Mormugao e Salcete). Di lì a poco nacquero anche la Second Division e la Third Division (organizzate su vari gironi), mentre le promozioni/retrocessioni fra i vari livelli erano regolate da un sistema di play-off. Nella stagione 1977/79 fu introdotta la Super League. La crescita della Goa Football Association proseguì rapidamente e le squadre di Goa iniziarono a mettersi in mostra anche a livello nazionale. Con l’avvento del professionismo nacque la Pro League nella stagione 1998/99, animata da 5 club: Churchill Brothers Sports Club, Salgaocar Sports Club, Dempo Sports Club, Vasco Sports Club e VLM Sports Club. Il nuovo campionato fu sponsorizzato da un’importante marca di whisky, la Shaw Wallace. Dalla stagione 2000/01 le squadre aumentarono a sei. Tutt’oggi il calcio di Goa è l’unico in tutta l’India a possedere uno status professionistico.

FEDERATION CUP (o FED CUP)

Competizione a cadenza annuale, istituita nel 1977 e riservata ai club campioni degli stati di Bengal, Goa, Maharashtra, Punjab e Kerala. Prima del varo della I-League, la Fed Cup era la competizione di maggiore prestigio dell’India e tutt’oggi viene considerato il secondo per importanza del paese, dopo la I-League, anche perché consente al club vincitore di partecipare alla AFC Cup, insieme al vincitore della I-League.

SANTOSH TROPHY

Il Santosh Trophy è una competizione nazionale riservata alle rappresentative degli Stati e del governo, che ebbe inizio nel 1941. Nelle prime stagioni di vita gli incontri venivano disputati sulla base di due tempi di 30 minuti ciascuno. Il trofeo fu donato dalla Indian Football Association (IFA), che diffuse il calcio nella regione del Bengala, in memoria dell’ultimo Maharaja Sir Manmatha Nath Roy Chowdhary di Santosh (oggi in Bangladesh). L’ultimo Maharaja rimase presidente della IFA per lungo tempo.

DURAND CUP

La Durand Football Cup, la competizione calcistica più antica dell’India, fu inaugurata nel 1888 a Simla su iniziativa di Sir Mortimer Durand, allora ministro degli Esteri dell’India. Dal 1940 il torneo è stato disputatoa New Delhi. Inizialmente il torneo fu disputato dalle squadre dei reggimenti, dell’esercito britannico di stanza in India. Una prima edizione non ufficiale della Durand Cup fu disputata nel 1887 e coinvolse solo le squadre del governo e dei servizi civili di Simla. Quel trofeo fu vinto dal Rest of Simla.

ROVERS CUP

La Rovers Cup fu ideata dal Bombay Rovers Club ed è il secondo torneo dell’India per nascita, dopo la Durand Cup. Le prime edizioni furono dominate dalle squadre militari britanniche, mentre i Bangalore Muslims furono la prima squadra Indiana vera e propria a vincere il trofeo nel 1937. La competizione fu interrotta a partire dalla stagione nella stagione 2000/01 a causa dei calendari troppo fitti e dell’assenza di sponsorizzazioni.

NADKARNI CUP

La Nadkarni Cup è una delle più prestigiose competizioni calcistiche di Mumbai (Bombay). Il trofeo fu originalmente donato da by Mr G.N. Nadkarni come premio per la vittoria del Junior Rovers Tournament (una versione della Rovers Cup riservata alle squadre delle scuole e dei college) che fu inaugurato nel 1908 ma che rimase in vita solo fino al 1914 a causa della prima guerra mondiale. Dopo il conflitto, il Junior Rovers Tournament riprese solo nel 1925, quando la Western Indian Football Association (WIFA) decise di mettere di nuovo in palio il trofeo riservandolo a squadre composte esclusivamente da giocatori indiani ed escludendo perciò tutti i club britannici ed anglo-indiani. Da quel momento, la Nadkarni Cup è stata disputata abbastanza regolarmente con cadenza annuale. Negli anni Ottanta e Novanta vi presero parte le squadre che militavano nella WIFA e nella Bombay / Mumbai District Football Association (BDFA, poi MDFA). Dal 1992 al 2001 non venne disputata. Dal 1936 ad oggi il Junior Rovers Tournament è stato disputato regolarmente, ma con in palio un altro trofeo donato dal giornale Times of India.
