Nel 1892 fu fondato il Falkland Island Volunteers (FI Volunteers, attuale Falkland Islands Defence Force, FIDF), che intraprese da subito le prime attività agonistiche. Nel 1916 nacque lo Stanley Football Club che in seguito venne ribattezzato Stanley Athletic Club. Negli anni Trenta alcuni ragazzi del posto fondarono il “Jubilee Club”, che disputò spesso incontri con il FI Volunteers in challenge matches. Negli anni Quaranta, dopo l’inizio della seconda Guerra mondiale, con l’arrivo nelle Falkland del “Second Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment”, prese il via un campionato a sette squadre, di cui una composta da giocatori del luogo (FIDF), e sei rappresentative delle guarnigioni di stanza nelle isole. Per la cronaca, il FIDF terminò il torneo al 6° posto. Dopo lo scioglimento del West Yorkshire Regiment, nacque una nuova lega, formata da sei squadre: The Service Corps I, The Service Corps II, Royal Scots I, Royal Scots II, Navy, Falkland Islands Defence Force (FIDF). Nel 1947 nacque ufficialmente la Falkland Islands Football League, formata da quattro club: Hotspurs (maglie a quarti verdi e bianche), Stanley Dynamos (strisce gialle e nere), Stanley Redsox (strisce rosse e blu), Stanley United (bianche). Dagli anni Cinquanta ai Settanta l’HMS Protector, una nave rompighiaccio di pattuglia nell’Atlantico del Sud, faceva scalo ogni anno alle Isole Falkland e il suo equipaggio disponeva di una squadra che disputava una serie di 5 partite organizzate appositamente per l’assegnazione della cosiddetta “Shield”. In seguito il Protector fu rimpiazzato dall’HMS Endurance nella competizione, che vinse nel 1982, poco prima dell’invasione delle isole da parte dell’esercito argentino. |
